The Interface Is Becoming an Agent
What changes when an interface can help carry a task forward, not just display the next step?
From commands to collaboration
Most interfaces wait for a person to choose the next action. An agent-oriented interface can propose a path, gather context, and complete bounded work. That changes what the product needs to explain.
A useful agent makes three things clear: what it plans to do, what information it will use, and where a person can step in. Without those signals, speed can feel like uncertainty.
Design the handoff
The strongest moments are often handoffs between person and system. A product can show a short plan before acting, offer a precise checkpoint when judgment matters, and summarize what changed afterward.
- Show the scope of an action before it starts.
- Keep a visible route to review or undo.
- Explain outcomes in the language of the task.
Trust grows when a product makes its behavior understandable at the moment it matters.
The interface becomes less about presenting every control at once and more about keeping the work legible as it moves forward.
